Walks in Philadelphia and Providence Break Records
With the help of a new partnership with WCTK Cat Country in Providence, the Southern New England Walk Now for Autism raised over $280,000, and doubled the number of participating teams from 2006. The radio station successfully promoted autism awareness in conjunction with the walk and hosted a telethon to raise additional funds. The Philadelphia Walk Now for Autism took place the day before, attracting over 8,500 walkers, and raising nearly $750,000. Chicago ING Direct Ride Now Raises Over $120,000
On Sunday, September 16, over 1,800 riders turned out for the Fifth Annual Chicago ING DIRECT Ride Now and raised over $120,000 - making it the most successful Ride Now event to date. Boston Red Sox Host Autism Awareness Night
On September 12, the Boston Red Sox hosted an Autism Awareness Night at Fenway Park, continuing a seven year tradition of supporting the Greater Boston Walk Now for Autism. Local volunteers, walkers, and their children were recognized in a pre-game ceremony on the field, during which Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield presented a $10,000 check to Autism Speaks. Read more .
Top Chef Wins $15,000 for Autism Speaks
Franklin Becker, executive chef at Brasserie in New York City, walked away the big winner at the Foxwoods Celebrity Chef Charity Poker Tournament, which took place during the Second Annual Foxwoods Food & Wine Festival, on September 16. Becker's first place purse of $15,000 will be donated to Autism Speaks. Read more.
