AGRE Celebrates 10th Anniversary
|
|
|
The Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE) is celebrating its ten year anniversary. Since its founding in 1997, AGRE has collected genetic and clinical information from individuals with autism and their families. The database now includes data from over 1600 families and is in use by over 160 researchers from 13 countries. It has contributed significantly to the productivity of autism researchers, and recently reached a milestone when the 100th research paper citing the AGRE database was published. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, we've gathered some of the key findings using the AGRE database.

Detecting Autism Early
|
|
|
A recent article in Scientific American Mind examines research being done by scientists looking for new ways to diagnose autism in infants, which could lead to earlier and more effective treatment. The article spotlights the work of David Amaral, whose work looks for biological markers of autism that could be used for diagnosis, and that of Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, who is working on identifying certain early behavioral patterns which forecast autism spectrum disorders.

Fall Walk Kickoff Events Double '06 Attendance

Surfers Paddle Around NYC to Raise Awareness
|
|
|
Fifty surfers took to the waters around Manhattan on the morning of August 13 for SeaPaddle NYC, a fundraiser for autism awareness. All money raised by this event will fund organizations that support autism awareness, including Autism Speaks.

"Desperate Housewives" Stars Raise Autism Awareness
|
|
|
On Saturday, August 11, stars of ABC's "Desperate Housewives" attended "James Denton Bobblehead Night" at Goodwin Field, in Fullerton, Calif, where fans received Bobblehead dolls with the actor's likeness. The event took place at an Orange County Flyers game, and raised over $9,000 for Autism Speaks. In attendance were "Desperate Housewives" co-stars James Denton and Teri Hatcher, along with show creator, Mark Cherry.
