New Clinical Trials Network Study Announced
|
|
|
Autism Speak's Clinical Trials Network is launching a new study in collaboration with specialty pharmaceutical company Neuropharm Group Plc. The trial, known as SOFIA (Study of Fluoxetine in Autism), will include more than 100 children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders to confirm the effectiveness of a proprietary preparation of fluoxetine in reducing certain core symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Study: Children Can Be Diagnosed by Age One
|
|
|
Researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute published a study this week showing that autism can be diagnosed at around one year of age. The researchers tracked social and communicative development in children with high-risk and others in low-risk groups from 14 to 36 months. Half of the children who developed autism were diagnosed by around their first birthday. Dr. Rebecca Landa, lead study author, and her colleagues also identified many key symptoms for which parents and doctors should be watching. Read more.

"A Cure for Autism" is Semifinalist in AMEX Project
|
|
|
"A Cure for Autism" is one of 50 semifinalists in American Express's Members Project, which aims to unite American Express card members behind one cause. Autism Speaks is the "Fulfilling Organization" for the project, which was submitted by the mother of nine-year-old twin boys with autism. American Express will donate $1 to the winning project for each card member who registers on the project's website, up to $5 million. Card members vote on one project per elimination round, and the winning project will be announced on August 7.
