Promoting Participation in Swim Programs for Children with ASD
University Of Kansas Research Institute
In the Kansas City area, competitive swim programs for children with disabilities exist, but few pre-competitive swim lessons are available. The few programs available are staffed with instructors who do not have experience working with children with ASD. Staff for the proposed program will partner with a community pool, located in an urban neighborhood with a primarily low-income Hispanic population. Their purpose is to provide beginning through competitive swim lessons to novice swimmers with ASD at low to no cost. Licensed occupational therapists and a recreational therapist with experience working with children with ASD and teaching swimming will train instructors and manage the program.
