ASD Social Skills Training And Peer Mentoring In Schools

To promote social skills training to children with ASD, the proposed service project will develop a program and manual that teaches social skills, peer sensitivity, and improves relationships of children with ASD in the school setting. Using a participatory design of program development, the main steps to achieving this goal are: Conduct focus groups with all stakeholders, including the administration, staff, and teachers as well as parents of children with ASD; Conduct 40 hours of observation of the children with ASD in the classroom in order to get a better understanding of their specific social needs in this setting; Visit and observe other school-based peer mentoring programs that may inform our program; Develop a manual that will address the identified needs and goals; Implement the program in the school setting and obtain feedback from stakeholders and participants.
