The Volusia Walk Now for Autism Speaks, begun in 2010 as an off-shoot of the Orlando Walk, was founded by a dedicated group of parents and has grown in to an established Walk of its own. An estimated 6,250 participated in Orlando’s Walk Now for Autism Speaks on November 9th at Cranes Roost Park. This 9th annual Walk had special appearances by the Chick-Fil-A Cow, Rainforest Café’s Cha!Cha, clowns, balloon artists and more! Live performances by songwriter/singer Starr Fields, selections by Orange Blossoms Chorus and nearly a dozen other stage guests entertained throughout the morning.

A record-setting 20,000 walkers - including individuals with autism, their families and friends - joined together at Tempe Beach Park on Sunday, Oct. 27 for the annual Arizona Walk Now for Autism Speaks, resulting in over $1.5 million in donations and increased awareness for the disorder.

More than 8,000 walkers joined together on the National Mall Saturday, November 2nd for the 13th Annual Washington, DC Walk Now for Autism Speaks.  To date, the event has raised more than $650,000 and counting in support of Autism Speaks’ mission to fund research, increase awareness and family services and advocate for individuals with autism and their families.

The 6th Annual Central Valley Walk Now for Autism Speaks took place at Modesto Junior College - West Campus in Modesto, California on October 19th. The Walk had close to 3,000 people in attendance! To date the Walk has raised over $85,000 with donations continuing to come in!

In honor of the Autism walk this weekend, I wanted to share the story I wrote for my son.

Now that he is school aged, the other children are old enough to see that he is different but not old enough to understand why. I thought there should be a children's book that explains Autism to kids. When I went to write a social story, this is what came out.
