The more the autism field grows, the greater the need to maintain continual contact between those doing the research. Observations from one group of researchers can quickly be clarified by another group without waiting, negative results can be shared so investigators do not waste precious time following unproductive avenues, and technical expertise can be communicated to maximize the likelihood of success.

Often times meetings are required because researchers working in a particular subtopic of autism are never given the opportunity to just gather together and focus solely on their special area of interest. In other cases, meetings are an opportunity to introduce concepts about autism to a population of researchers or clinicians that may not otherwise ever consider the relevancy of their work to those suffering from autism. For all these reasons, the Autism Speaks Science Program sees support of autism-related research meetings as one of the most important things it can do.
