House Passes Bill Extending Coverage to State Employees
SANTA FE (February 1, 2013) -- The state House of Representatives has unanimously approved a bill (HB.22) that would extend coverage under New Mexico's 2009 autism insurance reform law to state employees.
Sponsored by Bernalillo legislators, Rep. James Smith (R) and Senator Bill O'Neill (D), the measure cleared the House 62-0 and moves to the Senate. The 2009 law requires coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism through age 19, including up to $36,00 a year for applied behavior analysis.
In addition to New Mexico, legislatures in California, Iowa and Kansas this year will consider bills to expand coverage under existing autism insurance reform laws.
